improve fuel efficiency: optimize the fuel system

Keep your vehicle’s fuel system, injectors, exhaust gas recirculation valve, carburetor and fuel filters clean, in good repair and properly adjusted.

What could be wiser than keeping up the maintenance on this important system in your vehicle? Make sure it’s kept immaculately clean.

Could your idle speed be adjusted lower? Find out from your mechanic. If you use an air conditioner, investigate whether your RPM (revolutions per minute) at idle is correct or if it could it be lowered to save fuel and at the same time give the engine the power to operate the AC unit when stationary. Ask your mechanic to adjust the carburetor or injection system to the maximum efficiency. If you operate an older vehicle, this will lead to big savings.

Ever hear of a catalytic converter? In the United States it’s illegal to remove, but what else could you do? Replace it with a new one from the factory, get a more fuel-efficient (after market) converter or even get some sort of “cat back” exhaust added on.
