how to save gas: cut the wind like a knife

If you plan to drive at higher speeds frequently (for example, excessive freeway travel), changing your vehicle to one that is aerodynamically designed could be worthwhile.

Aligning your wheels will also reduce drag and improve the aerodynamics of your car.

When using a pickup or open cargo type vehicle, remember that the aerodynamics of the vehicle entail the stern, not just the bow. Pack accordingly. Consider some sort of covering for the cargo holding area when not in use.

The use of roof racks can also waste fuel. In fact, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 percent. If you need to pack a lot into the vehicle, try to fit your things into the trunk.

hypermiling tip: travel light

Remove excess or unnecessary weight from the vehicle whenever practical. Any unneeded surplus items not removed from the vehicle will have some negative influence on fuel efficiency.

The weight of a full tank of fuel will also have a negative effect on the fuel efficiency of smaller vehicles. Fill your tank only when it is inconvenient to stop and refill or when traveling long distances. Try not to hoard fuel by always keeping your tank filled.

how to save gas: inflate your tires right

Fill your tires to the recommended p.s.i. level or even slightly higher than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Some experts suggest keeping tires filled 3 to 5 p.s.i. higher to reduce road resistance and save fuel.

You can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires properly inflated. This strategy is especially important if you’ll be overloaded with weight or are towing another vehicle. Properly inflated tires also last longer and are safer.

Note: In some situations over inflating a tire can be dangerous. Before deciding what p.s.i. level to inflate your tires, think about the following factors: How old is the tire? How much tread does the tire have? How many people or how much weight will it support? How cold or hot is the climate? Are the roads I travel on in good repair?

Also keep trailer tires filled and in good repair, otherwise the tires will behave like brakes.
